The Uncommon Ground

The Uncommon Ground

Prologue

The world is full and cannot be devoid of conflicts. Conflicts are there everywhere be it internal or external. The very simple reason for this is there is prevalence of negative and positive energy in and around us and when the two come together there is a clash. But how should such a clash be prevented. Is it possible for both the negative and positive energy to synthesize with each other? The concept of devil and angel symbolizing negative and positive energy has been there since long. They had always been in opposition that is also there. There always had been an uncommon ground between them that had heightened the tension between them

With the help of allegorical theme this piece of fiction aims to show such a conflict.

Chapter 1

There existed a forest which was ruled by the horses, though initially the tigers were the head of the forest but times have changed not just for human but even for animals. The suppressed species everywhere is now coming on to rule.

A tragic incident had taken place in this forest which is known as Farmland. To deal with the situation that has come up the state head, the horse Stanley was giving dictation to his clerk donkey in order to send the letter to their neighboring forest land. Stanley had a detailed talk with the head of that forest Fishy, the crocodiles. The two forests were separated by a wide stream of water. Some animals from the Truceland had come to Farmland and had disturbed not just the property but also harmed their animals. The damage done was a lot. All the animals were disturbed and they wanted justice. Meanwhile the administrators of The Farmland were busy in trying to determine and punish the culprits. One of the gorilla involved in the attack had been caught but he refused to speak anything. It was difficult to judge who was behind the attack and what was the intention. Even though he refused to speak it was confirmed that he was from Truceland (as the specie of Gorilla was found in Truceland only) but the Truceland was constantly denying such claims.

Stanley dictated the donkey “Our land was vandalized and terrorized by some animals from your land. We want your co-operation in finding out the culprits. We know the attack was made by the Gorillas but we also know that the gorillas are not intelligent enough to plan such a large scale attack alone. Surely there are other animals involved and who are actually the mastermind of this attack. Kindly look into the matter as it is of grave concern…”

Stanley went on to give more instructions which the donkey completed. Finally when the dictation was complete the donkey was able to get some time off. He went on to join his other colleagues who were discussing the same problem. “I really wish that whosoever is involved in the attack are caught soon.” said a sheep.

On that the clerical donkey remarked “It is not that easy but Mr. Stanley is serious about it and it may soon also be figured out that who else was involved, the actual problem lies in how to get them punished because they are not from our land even if we are able to figure them out Truceland will not extradite them to our land, it’s the least posibility they will do that.”

“Even though least but still possibility is there..” said the sheep

“Hope is the only thing we have” replied the donkey.

Chapter 2

“How can you be so sure that those Gorillas were from our land only?” asks Fishy.

“We have evidences sir”, said Stanley “And that too a live evidence, the one gorilla we have in our custody is found in your forest only.”

Fishy starts frowning “Ok, fine but you very well know, no gorilla can swim so how did they cross the border?”.

“Well that is precisely the point. They couldn’t have done that alone which means someone else is also involved. These gorillas are not just incapable of swimming but also incapable of planning such a large scale attack.”

“So you mean to say that there are more animals involved. Look all I want to say that I have no information about any such activity and without any sufficient evidence I am not going to investigate anything. There is no guarantee that the gorillas were from our land only. It can also be possible that they are from your other neighbouring land, the East York.”

“Mr Fishy, the gorillas are inhabitants of your land! They do not live there.”

“Yes, but what if some had gone and started living there and then may have come to your land and attack. You see the boundary between your land with them is also not divided by any water stream which makes it more easy to cross.”

Stanley releases a huge sigh “Sir do you know what you are saying even? If at all that would have happened we would have got the information as to move to East York they would have to cross our land first and had they done it our intelligence would have informed of such events”.

“Probably your intelligence is not as smart as you think; probably there is some kind of failure in your intelligence. You see there are lots of possibilities” says Fishy with a smirk.

But this is one strong possibility which I am talking about Mr Fishy. The probability of gorillas coming from your land is more than coming from East York.”

You see Mr Stanley, you may have some evidence but it is not enough for us to take action right now but as and when you have it, feel free to talk to us” and the line is disconnected.

“Feel free to talk to us after gathering evidence. What else proof they need?” To come to the point, as expected they are not going to co-operate and that is for obvious reasons” remarked Stanley to the other officials in the meeting, which consisted of the defense minister, the home minister and the army chief. Stanley switches on the television. The news of the attack is all what is coming. The damage done to the forest and the life of the animals taken, nearly 400 animals were killed, more than 150 animals were injured and the forest damage was unaccounted, trees had been in burnt in large numbers, plantations were destroyed, most animals had become homeless. He closes the tv and puts a file on the desk. “Gentle animals” he says “this is the file of the witnesses and the proofs and most importantly this is the file of the Gorilla Basak. Once we are able to get him talk or trace his origin then we’ll see what they have to talk about then!

Chapter 3

A deer was roaming around the field nearby the water stream when suddenly some gorillas emerged from the rivulet and attacked any animal they saw, they spared no one; cows, sheep, hens all were slaughtered mercilessly except for the dear who was able to hide behind some bushes; but could also hear the screams of all the animals. The screams were deafening and all the more heart aching as there were many animals who were his friend. He could feel his friends shreik in pain but could not gather the courage to go up to them for they were still there and what could he do even if he went. Those gorillas were huge and armed and he was of no match to them. He feared for his life, what if they see him? What will he do if they tried to kill him? Where and how will he run? Suddenly he felt a hand on his hand and he woke with a jerk. He was dreaming. Since the attack, a peaceful sleep was difficult for him. All he could dream about, was the dreadful evening when that horrible incident took place.

It was his mother; she woke him up and asked “Are you all right?”

He said “Yes I am fine, just the dream.”

“It is the police “she said, “They have come to ask you about that evening. They want to know if you saw someone in particular.”

“I’ll talk to them you take some rest” saying that he got up from his bed, splashed some water on himself and after he got ready he went out to talk to the dog squad who had come to investigate the case.

Outside the dogs were standing, one of them was one eyed; he had lost his eye while chasing one of these very gorillas. Even though he was one eyed he was sharper than any other dog. His name was Dang, one of the smartest and the bravest dog cop. The deer came out of his house near about after ten minutes. He still seemed terrified from what he had gone through. Dang, being the leader approached him and started questioning him about the horrible incident.

So apart from the gorillas did you notice anything else? asked Dang. “Not much, actually I don’t remember it was chaotic and dreadful that is all I can remember ” replied the deer. “Think well” said Dang, “You were stuck to that place for nearly an hour while those gorillas had gone from there in about fifteen minutes. Surely you were troubled by the sight but there must have been something due to which you kept hiding. What kept you standing in one spot for forty five minutes, there is something more than fear due to which you couldn’t come out of your hiding spot even after they had left.” The deer looked at Dang with pleading eyes as if to say please I can’t speak right now. Probably Dang was touched by the look and dropped the conversation there. He felt it was pointless to ask the questions when the deer was in such a terrible state of mind. It had just been two days since the attack took place; a very less time for the meek animal to recover from such a terrible incident. He pondered over the situation for a while, then explained calmly to the deer, “Look I know you have gone through a lot, you have lost your near and dear ones right now may not be the right time to ask you such questions but know one thing my friend if we don’t find out quickly that who was involved in the attack then there will be a great probability that this attack may occur in the future yet again, it might be more dreadful so if at all there is something which you would like to tell us, say it soon.” saying that Dang got up from his seat and so did the other two dog officers who had come with him and they left the house.

Ch 4

Meanwhile there was some other talks going on in Truceland. Krafty, the fox minister was talking to the gorillas. The minister was snarling over the gorilla army. “Why is that I have the most stupid of all gorillas! Gorilla tactics are best known for their ability to hide and attack, but my gorillas are so smart. They thought why work the conventional way lets do something new and your desire of doing something new has created nuisance for me. Not only they saw you but one of you even managed to get caught!”

After shouting at them he dismissed the meeting and now he was supposed to meet Mr Fishy.

Sir, believe me I will work out a way from this mess” said Krafty sensing the anger in Fish’s eyes. We will never let them prove that the Gorillas were from our land.

Fishy swishes his tail around damaging the newly grown plant and says “Aren’t you forgetting something?” asks Fishy with a raised eyebrow, swishing his tail on the other side hitting another plant he says “They have our animal! and maybe he hasn’t spoken anything right now but sooner or later he will. What will you do then Mr Krafty?

Bowing his head in front of him he say “Sir, our Gorillas are trained they know what to speak and what not to.”

“Oh yes they are trained, weren’t they trained to hide.” mocked Fishy

“I agree sir we have made some mistake but believe me nothing will go wrong now.”

“It better not or else you will not be alive to give any explanation and I would hate to do that you know.” says Fishy with a cruel look in his eyes.

“I know sir, and for this very purpose I need to go and meet Jambo.”

Very well, have your meeting fast and decide on your plan of action as fast as possible” answers Fishy. The meeting ends and Krafty leaves for Jambo’s place.

Jambo was a hyena, he lived in a secluded valley along with his group. He was greedy and devilish yet stupid at the same time. His laughter was ear piercing, the animals dreaded it not just because it indicated something bad but also because it was unbearable.

Basak has been caught, you must be informed about this.” “Of course I am” says Jambo smoking his cigar at the same time. “But there is something else which I wish to speak about. Our team animals are not getting very good food and also the place we are staying has become too damp, it needs some renovation so little bit of fund would be nice” says Jambo with a cunning smile on his face. “Jambo this is not the time to discuss such petty matters.” “On the contrary this is very much the time to discuss such things Mr Krafty, other wise you are always busy with your important work.” “All right” he takes out a stack of leafs which is a cheque book, takes out one leaflet and hands it over to Jambo, fill in the amount you want.” Jambo smiles “Now I hope we can talk?” says Fishy “Oh yes we can always talk.” replies Jambo. “Basak is in their custody, sooner or later he will speak up and fingers will be raised upon us, do whatever but none of the officials name should come up. Mind you “none”. “What are we for sir? Do not worry even if Basak speaks he will speak of only those things which he has knowledge of.” “Jambo, he is not their only source of information but the information given by him can also prove to be useful to them, just do one thing for me don’t use your brain too much. I’ll tell you what needs to be done and how just do as I say.”

Chapter 5

The other two dog officer who had gone along with Dang to meet the deer were Percy and Stryker. All three were ferocious as they belonged to the category of dog hound. Percy and Stryker were the sub-ordinates, where Percy was kind of reserved while Stryker was more bold and outgoing kind nonetheless both were very good officers.

So what do you both think officers? Has that fellow really seen anything?” asked Dang

I don’t think so sir. I believe he was terrified and that may be the reason why he was stuck to that place for such a long time.” replied Stryker.

What about you Percy?” Dang asked again.

I am not sure sir, but it is either he has seen something very terrible or he is just scared.”

So do I think, I want you both to keep a watch on this house.” said Dang.

Yes sir!” replied the two together.

The next day both Percy and Stryker were sitting outside the Deer’s house.

Why do you have to propose such intelligent ideas? Now see where we are stuck. Just keep sitting and watching! On top of that there is nothing to eat here.” says Stryker running his eyes all around the place

If you want I can get you something. There is a restaurant nearby, maybe around 1km.” replied Percy

No no you just tell me where it is I’ll have a walk too, you stay here and keep a watch. I’ll get something for you as well.” saying that Stryker gets up from his place.

Stryker took the route which Percy had told him and finally he reached the restaurant. He ordered some food for himself and his friend and sat on a table. There was a television in the restaurant which was showing some news. A news flash then came which said that Truceland wants to establish the same old peaceful relations with The Farmland as before and for that they are willing to enter into an agreement that would strengthen their relations.

Such kind of problems are faced by nearly every animal kingdom but instead of blaming each other we should try to find a solution by coming to a common ground. Then only some effective solution will be achieved.” said Fishy in his interview with the journalists.

One journalist then asked “Sir how do you propose to come to peace when in the past the relations had become so bitter due to the aggressive policy of your nation?”

See” replied Fishy, “You need to know this in order to make things better for the future you need to forgive and forget the past. Then only we can solve this whole problem.”

Another journalist asked “So does that mean you are ready to forgo the dispute over the Apple area?”

The ‘Apple area’ is altogether a different topic don’t mix it here.” remarked Fishy.

Aren’t you getting biased on the forgive and forget thing?” asked the second journalist.

End of discussion now please I have other important matters to attend.” saying that he left the interview.

What a hypocrite” said Stryker.

Haven’t they been that since ages” said a cow on a table next to that of Stryker.

You see being a cow I am simple and tend to stay calm but even I tend to kick when I feel threatened.”

What if you don’t know who is the one threatening you?”

You always know who or what is threatening you. There is always some kind of interest involved when an animal threatens another animal. An animal may hide his identity but he can never hide his interest.”

The small encounter with that cow had left Stryker speechless. The cow had given him a very good hint if only he could make good use of it. With this thought he reached back to his position where he had left Percy. He gave him the food and asked if anything happened to which Percy replied in negative. After a while he asked Percy

What is the name of this witness?”

Dale. Dale Reed.”

Yeah Dale. I think we should go and try to talk to him. I believe we should try to get him to talk or else it will take ages.” said Stryker

If you wish you can go but I will stay here. Someone needs to keep a watch outside after all.” said Percy.

Fine with me” saying that he got up from his position and started moving towards Dale’s house.

He went and knocked the door. It was Dale who opened the door, he did not say anything but just stood there.

Can I have some water?” he asked Dale. “It’s very hot outside.” The deer shook his head and came back with a glass of water.

So how are you now?”

I am fine” said Dale

Can I ask you something?” Stryker said.

Yes.”

Do you still feel scared of anything?

The deer blinked simply and said

May be.”

Is it me?”

No not you, why will I be scared of you” said Dale with a surprise in his tone.

May be because I am too ferocious to look at. A lot of animals are scared of me you see and I am actually proud of it” he added “So you know you can take the name of all the animals you are scared of. Trust me we will handle them all who have scared you.” said Stryker with a smile.

Dale looked at him paused for a moment then said “I saw sharks, they were huge and ferocious their sight scared me to death. I also saw a cat at that time. Then I saw that same cat the day your chief had come to question me about the attack. I was not sure as to if the cat was from across the border or from our land but it still looked dangerous to me and I was afraid so I couldn’t speak.”

Hmm that explains a lot of thing now but that cat. Did you see it after that time?”

No it has probably left the place but I still cannot be very sure.”

But what made you suspect the cat? It is quiet possible that it is from our land was present where the attack took place and by coincidence also lives somewhere around your place.”

When the attack took place every animal was running to hide themselves but I saw it moving around freely as if it was fearless. It was a strange thing for any animal to do. Then I saw it again that day and so got fearful about it.” Dale answered

All right, thanks for your co-operation you have been a great help. One more thing do not fear of anything. Right now I believe there is no danger for you the shark cannot come here and neither will the Gorillas at least for some time and as for the cat I think I will take care of it. If at all there is something you get to know or if you feel your safety is at risk this is my number feel free to contact me and thanks again for your co-operation. Goodbye!

Good bye” replied Dale and Stryker left the house.

Chapter 6

Even we want peace and if that is happening by a mutual agreement then why can’t we just agree to it?” asked the defense minister Curie the bear.

It is too soon to enter into any agreement right now. We are still investigating about the attack and even when we make someone our friend we enquire about their background and here the question is not about making a friend but making peace with the enemy and before doing that we need to be sure about his intention.” replied Stanley.

After seeing the news Stanley had called for the meeting. Curie bear, the defense minister, Stuart fox the home minister and Vilkin tiger the army chief were present in the meeting.

But sir what harm can be there in an agreement” asked Stuart.

That will not be a problem to you but it will hinder our working” growled Vilkin. “We will be bounded by that treaty and will not be able to conduct an independent inquiry on them.”

I was only suggesting for peace nothing else rest is up to Mr Stanley only what he wants. But one thing what has been done cannot be undone we cannot cling to the past and destroy our future. Rest is up to Mr Stanley’s discretion.”

The meeting ends up here. Everyone begins to leave when Stanley signals Vilkin to wait.

What is the progress in the investigation?”

I have sent the dog squad team for investigation. We have information that a deer was witness to the attack. He was scared so till now he hasn’t spoken but we believe probably there is something which the deer knows, we are just waiting for him to open up.”

Time is what I don’t have those animals of Truceland have proposed peace and if we do not give a positive reply it will look as if we are the ones who want to fight.”

A knock is heard at the door-
“Who is it?” asks Stanley

Sir the assistant donkey enters the office Mr. Dang wishes to meet Mr. Vilkins.”

Yes, send him in replied Vilkin.”

yes sir”

He is the officer in charge for the investigation of the attack. Perhaps he has got something.”

May I come in sir”.

Yes please do and I hope you have something good to tell.”

Good or bad I do not know sir but I have information. I had left two of my officer to keep a guard on Dale Reed’s house. I didn’t want to lose on him so two of my officers were keeping a check over him. One of my officer managed to have a talk with him informally and he said that he saw some sharks talking to the gorillas. We believe it was with the help of those sharks that the gorillas came here.”

If it was really the sharks then I believe we have something interesting to speak about in the peace talks.” says Stanley

There is one another thing which I want to tell. He said he also saw a cat and not once, twice. He believes the cat also came from across the waters. If that is true then I think we should be careful.” replies Dang

Hmm all right! For right now we have enough information you can leave now.” says Vilkin

Yes sir” says Dang and leaves the room.

When do you think we should have the meeting?” asks Stanley.

I think next week we can have the meeting, by that time we might have something more in hand.” replies Stanley.”

So now we have something good to talk Vilkin, what do you think?”

Yes we do, but I am thinking about the cat. I believe we have an intruder sir which is not a good sign.”

You are free to investigate into it just keep me updated.”

I will sir.”

Chapter 7

It was morning time, bright sunny day. Stanley was watching news on his television. Then all of a sudden a surprising news came up. A terror camp of Trucleand had taken the responsibility of the attack. Jambo, the head of the hyena pack claims to have planned the attack. The attack he said was made to tell the animals of Farmland that if they do not give up the claim of the Apple area they will continue to make such attacks on them and make life impossible for them. The news was not a shocker as this group popularly known as “The Shadow Dwellers” have been responsible for some previous terrorist incidents too.

Stanley was having his cup of tea and thinking about the meeting which was scheduled to be after five days only. He now knew that there is sufficient evidence that the attackers were from Truceland. But will this knowledge give him an upper hand in the meeting that is going to take place? It was a smart move the Truceland had taken the responsibility of the attack but yet they cannot be blamed for it. Yet he felt he should have this meeting in order to know their intentions.

Meanwhile in the Truceland too Fishy was watching television to see if any development had taken place in their investigation. There wasn’t anything new which convinced him that they haven’t stuck on anything concrete, or have they he thought to himself? Their silence was all the more dangerous. Could it be that they have something which they are not revealing. No no that cannot happen he thought because if they know something they are not supposed to then it is a big problem. “Something needs to be done” he said to himself. He took his phone and called Krafty “I need you to meet me, come to my home in an hour it is important.

Yes sir” Krafty replied. He kept the phone down and said to himself

Politics does not let you live your life peacefully.”

If you let politics be at peace then why will it not let you live peacefully” said his wife with a smile who was sitting besides him. Krafty gave a puzzled look to her. She did not say anything but asked him “When will you be back?”

I can’t really say but will try to come back soon. But what did you just say?” he asked.

Oh nothing much it’s just my philosophy that things react the way they are treated.” Fishy raised his eyebrow as he still didn’t quiet get it.

Oh don’t bother about it and come soon” she said.

After an hour Krafty reaches Fishy’s home. He is sitting in the hall room gazing at the head of the animals that had been put up not just for decoration but as a mark of Fishy’s achievments.

Fishy entered the room and Krafty rised from his seat wondering what could be the matter.

Sit down” he said while he placed himself in his seat.

I was thinking if you have any information as to what is actually going in Farmland. Have they found any kind of evidence?”

We have set our spies sir and very efficient ones.”

“Have they got anything”

“Up till now nothing. There was one witness but he hasn’t spoken anything yet.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes sir, he was under great trauma and would hardly speak to anyone.”

“Yet, ask your informers to keep a watch on him if he turns dangerous kill him!”

“Will do sir.”

“You can go now”

Kraftyy gets up and leaves.

“What watch him again! You know this is getting boring now. Even the police hasn’t gone to him after that day and I am supposed to be watching him, what for?” said Carl on being given orders by  Krafty.

“These are orders and this is your work you are not being paid for entertainment. The police may have not come up till now but what if they come in future. How will you know.”

“Relax, it’s not that I’ve left watching him completely. If the police would come I would know it.”

“I don’t want hearsay news, I want you to keep a close watch over him, do you get it?’

“Yes yes I get it.”

Chapter 8

Carl is standing near some kind of restaurant in the pretence of buying something. Few other animals were also sitting there. Meanwhile someone else also come.
“It’s cold today. What’s hot that you have”

“Place your order we’ll provide whatever you want”

“How about a hot cheese pizza with corn and mushroom toppings “

“Very well. You will have it in 15 minutes. “

He turns back and goes to have a seat when he notices Carl. He waits for his order while observing him. He then comes up to Carl

“Hey buddy new here?”

“Yes”

“Mind if I join you”

“Oh no not all”

“So you live in this area”

“Yeah kind of”

“Kind of?”

“Actually I am an employee. I have come here on orders from my boss. He likes the food of this restaurant very much.”

“I am sure he does” he says with a smile.

“Here is your order sir” the waiter comes with the Pizza “and yours will take about 10 more minutes”

“you can share from mine if you like” the stranger looks at Carl and says.

“No thanks, I don’t want to eat right now”

The food ordered by Carl arrives. He is about to leave when the stranger says

“We haven’t introduced ourselves”

“People call me Carl and you”

“I am Stryker”

Chapter 9

“The black cat is here which means we have great chances of clearing up this mess. But it also means that danger is still lurking around us. The only way to move ahead in the investigation is to catch it red handed.” says Dang

After the brief meet with Carl Stryker had reported the incident to his boss. He had carefully followed him that day and showed him to Dale. Without any hesitation Dale had identified him. After that it was felt that his protection should be increased. But if they wanted to catch Carl something also was to be done to arouse him. One cannot play defensive all the time.

“I think it should be rumored that Dale is going to the police station to reveal what all he knows and that he knows a lot about the attackers. This would also give him the chance to attack him.” says Dang

“But what if Dale gets injured in this attack” asks Percy

“No, he won’t. I have a plan for that.” replies Dang
“The news has spread like fire in the forest sir. It’s confirmed that he will be going to the police station”tell Carl to Krafty.

“Then you have to kill him. There is no other way out!”

It’s morning time, the day on which Dale is supposed to be going to the police station. Everything around his house is still and quiet. There is hardly any animal roaming still Carl had decided to attack Reed in the narrow secluded valley where he could easily finish his task without attracting much attention. Dale comes out of his house. Somehow he seemed bigger to him than before or perhaps it was the strong drink that he had taken. Carl begins to follow Dale quietly. They cross a bridge then some row of houses, Carl withholding his urge of attacking. The valley was still around five minutes from there.

“Just five minutes” he thinks “then all this will be over”. Finally the moment arrives. Carl speeds up his pace and jumps on the deer engraving it’s claws around the neck making Dale fall and roll down the valley. Carl follows Dale calmly thinking it to be deeply injured if not dead. But then the deer gets up and begins to take out it’s animal suit. Carl looked aghast. It was the stranger he met at the restaurant. Now it was time for Stryker to attack and for Carl to run. Carl runs at it’s full speed but Stryker makes a strong leap making him land straight on Carl.

“Got you! Now now don’t panic. I will not kill you we will go where we had to, the police station.”

At the police station Stryker comes along with Carl where Dang is already waiting for him.

“So now see if you wish to save yourself then you better tell us why you were attacking that deer. We have acquired a great deal of information about you so you will be imprisoned that is for sure and it may be that you will have to even serve the punishment of the crimes committed by your bosses”

“How can you do that, how can I alone be held responsible for such a massive attack.”

“We have an eye witness as you know and he saw you on the day of the attack moving around freely when everyone was running for their lives.”

Carl looks at Dale who has also come to the police station after a short while after him.

“Okay fine. The Gorillas came here with the help of the sharks and I along with them. Their purpose was to attack and flee and mine was to report the activities here after the attack and take preventive measures to avoid our nation’s name from coming up. After that I was supposed to be organizing a group amongst the animals here and turn them against your people and your land. The idea was to basically convey to everyone that you all are dictators and that would turn your people against you making it easier for us to capture the ‘Apple area’

“It’s always the apple area! Now, that we have concrete evidences it’s time to report to Mr Stanley.” replies Dang who is finally relieved.

Chapter 10

“There is sufficient evidence now to prove that indeed the conspiracy was hatched in Truceland. Not only this we have information that efforts were being made to disrupt peace in our country.” This was the statement given by Stanley to the media and it was flashing every now and then in the news. Will there be any meeting for the so called ‘peace agenda’ now was the question.

“The meeting will be there for sure but the agenda will now be whether Truceland wishes to take up the responsibility of the attack or not and the accountability that it will not happen in the future.” With these words Stanley got up from the press conference. Farmland had now concrete evidences for the attack being hatched in Truceland. Their intention was never a secret but every time what was needed were the evidence or witness. Their spy had been caught and he gave them everything he knew. The meeting takes place at the appointed time and this is what they said in the meeting

“We cannot control each and every animal of our kingdom. Some of them just become crazy due to some or the other reason. But for that you cannot hold the whole nation responsible. That Carl was just a crazy cat.”

“But who gave that crazy cat the access to such large amount of weapons and funds? How did that crazy cat come here in the first place and if it did with some kind of association didn’t you think it to be your duty to inform us about it. After all you want to have peace with us” asked Stanley.

“Look I’ve already said we cannot control everyone!”

“Seems to me you cannot control anyone and if that is the case I think we will have to interfere because we cannot tolerate these violent acts every now and then. It needs to be put to a stop and if you can’t then we will” answers Stanley

“What do you mean INTERFERE? Are you going to attack us.”says Fishy

“No just send some troops to root out all such organizations that conduct these conspiracies”

“What makes you think I will even accept such offer” yells Fishy

“Your idea of peace perhaps”

“I am done with the peace talks and I do not want any peace with you now. We were enemies and will be enemies! The meeting is over for me.”

Epilogue

Once an enemy always an enemy. Our interest determines our enemies and friends and our nature determines our interest. To redefine one’s nature is a very difficult task so how will one redefine their interest. When the first two steps are not even attempted to solve and one straight away jumps on trying to make his foes as his friends is equal to cheating ourselves.

What we are we will remain always be it devil or angel. Devil symbolizes strength or force while Angel symbolizes intellect. A combination of them would be great but for that true appreciation from both is needed for each other. Till the time there is some selfish interest involved in proposals of peace it will only be a temporary phase leading to violence again and again and the process would continue forever.

“अंधेर नगरी चौपट राजा” : The story of the modern India

“अंधेर नगरी चौपट राजा” : This was a very famous play written by Bhartendu Harishchandra, a well known Hindi writer. In the English language it can be called as ‘Dark nation and insane king’. The title of the play stands more relevant today than the time when it was written (that’s what I believe). When the state reaches this level of anarchy all one can think of is escaping from there. But what about those who have to live with it? Though I don’t have the great skills of Bhartendu harishchandra but I would like to make an attempt on this concept. 🙂
Thus , this will not be an article but a short drama.

Act I scene I

In an unknown land of desert four people are riding on a camel.
I man: I am feeling very thirsty do we have any water left?
II man: Yes, but be careful we still have a long way to go don’t finish it.
III man: Why do we always have more of the explosive stuff than the water? I mean what good will it do if we die out of thirst with all this explosives with us!
IV man: Fool! Do not question the authority. You have raised this question before us don’t dare to do that in front of our superiors. We are carrying this explosion for the sake of water only.
III man: Explosion for the sake of water? What does that even mean?
IV man: It means that if we will be able to scare our enemy to death we will be able to get anything and everything we want be it water or land.
III man: Wow! But what if they don’t get scared and what if they do something that scares us!
IV: You are sounding like a coward. Do you want to die in here.
The man takes out a gun and points at his companion. The other man gets terrified.
III: No No, I was just asking about possibilities.
The II man interrupts
II man: Stop fighting like kids both of you, Raza will you stop irritating yousuf with your stupid questions.
Raza: yeah ok sorry. I was just trying to talk not irritate anyone.
I man: Talking here also can make you get killed so be watchful.

Act I scene II

After a few silent hours the team reaches the destined spot, a newly made flyover which is heavily trafficked.
Yousuf : Raza you go over the other end of the flyover and Hakim you will be at this end. I will be waiting with Alam over there in the jeep, give me a call when you are ready.
Raza: We are ready, are you all ready?
Yousuf: Yes just two minutes then…..
DHUMMM!!!
A loud noise is heard Yousuf looks up and sees the flyover had collapsed. He along with his friend Alam rushes to the spot when another part of the flyover collapses over Alam. Yousuf is stunned at the sight. His friends are dead. He is the lone surviving terrorist though what they wanted to do had been done but not in the manner they thought.

A man: Are you all right? Did you lose anyone there.
Yousuf: Huh? Yes my three friends.
Man: The rotten government!
Yousuf calls up his superiors giving the details and he is told to file a case against the government, he listens to their orders and obeys them.

Act II Scene I

Inside a court a case is going.
“Yousuf Sayeed versus Government of India” announces the clerk after which some commotion takes place between the people who have come to witness the hearing.
Judge : Order order please maintain the decorum of the court.
Government lawyer : Sir I demand this case to be dismissed because after all our investigation we have come to confirm that this man is not from our country and he is a terrorist above all. He has no right thus to fight the case.
Defence lawyer: Objection sir, he may be not from our country but he is a human he may be a terrorist but so far he has not committed any crime. Till the time a thief does not steal you cannot call him a thief.
Government lawyer: But he came with full preparation to destroy the flyover and kill the people.
Defence: Yes but he couldn’t do it as the bridged collapsed before he could do anything. So that makes him innocent. His friends got killed and that makes him the sufferer.
Government lawyer: he is an outsider! his intention was to harm the people as it is, how can we allow him to file a suit?
Defence: sir, with all due respect we are a democratic country we need to show the people that we respect each and every individual. The world should know we are a true democracy and we are not communal at all. If this case is dismissed then everyone will think we are communal and our image will be tarnished at the world level. Moreover we cannot deny that the bridged collapsed due to government machinery failure. Many people got killed who should be held responsible for this?
Government lawyer : Yes the bridge collapsed but even this man had come for the same purpose.
Defence: Yes a purpose which he couldn’t complete and the law states you cannot punish a person until he commits the crime.
Judge: I’ve heard enough and well the defence has a valid point we cannot punish him without committing the crime I will have to allow this case.
Government lawyer: But the law is made by us only and when we can see the loophole we can change it too.
Judge: I am afraid the judiciary only protects the laws the task of formulation lies with the parliament. Till then we will have to pursue the case. Regarding his citizen status he may be an outsider but he is a human belonging to the grieved party. By dismissing the case our global image of a democratic nation will be hampered. The 6th of the next month will be the next hearing.

(Everyone disperses)

Scene II

A man shouts Yousuf Sayeed versus Government of India
Defense lawyer: Your honour I would like to call the contracter responsible for the making of the flyover.
(The contracter comes into the witness box )
D. Lawyer: First of all I would like to know how much money was involved in making this flyover ?
Contractor: About 8 crores₹
Lawyer: Did you use the complete fund or there was some mismanagement of funds?
Contracter: Sir, I have the details written 2 crore was allocated to the workers, 2 was for machinery and the rest 4 was spent on the material. I have submitted the file before the court.
Defence: I agree but that is only paper work it is also possible that in actual that money was not spent on this and was misappropriated.
Contractor: You can check the material if you want to there was no misappropriation.
Defence: That we will! Thank you for your co-operation anyways you may go. My next witness would be the leader of the labourers Hari Singh.
(Hari singh comes).
So Mr Hari Singh first I would like to know about the quality if material which was being used for the construction. How was it? Was it up to the mark ? Please do not try to hide anything we will figure it out soon and if you hide anything you may have to pay for it.
Hari Singh: Yes sir the material which we got was of good quality.
Defense: Did you check each and everything regularly ?
Hari Singh: I did it in the initial days actually. There was a wedding in my family so I had to go there. I don’t know what happened later on
Defense: Sir point to be noted here, negligence of duty by the leader of the labourers.
Hari Singh: No sir I made Alok kumar the in charge before leaving you can ask him.
Defense : But is he as qualified as you are to judge the material.
Hari Singh: He has been working with me for long he has experience of it.
Defense: Experience and qualification are two different things you shouldn’t have acted like that.
Govt lawyer: I object sir the man is just a labourer and all labourers exchange duty like this. The defence is trying to blame the labourer for the mishap. Even if they got low quality material they could not object as they are mere labourers.
Defence: Had they reported about it to the police at least it would have come to attention of the authorities. So many peoples life could have been saved.
Govt lawyer: The so many people would have still died because your client Mr Yousuf had full plans to bomb it. So please don’t talk about ‘so many people’.
Defence: You are diverting the topic now. This case is against government of India not against Mr Yousuf.
Defence: Your honour I think we will have to wait for the reports before we dwell further into the case.
Judge: Ok, next hearing will be on 26th of this month.

Scene III

Judge: So now proceed on with the case.
Government lawyer: Sir, finally the reports have come out and it is clear that the quality of material that was used was good.So there can be no charges against my clients.
Defence: I object sir, the report has been fabricated. If everything was so good why did the flyover collapse.
Government lawyer: The reason is that the traffic on the flyover was too heavy and it couldn’t handle the pressure so it collapsed. I’ve made a detailed study on this and this is the report.
(He hands one copy to the judge and the other to the defence lawyer).
I would like to call the traffic inspector of that area.
Judge: Permission granted.
(Traffic inspector arrives)
Government lawyer: Can you tell why the flyover was so heavily trafficked?
Traffic Inspector: I know sir we had been letting an unusually large amount of traffic on the flyover but we cannot detain them also the flyover was built to divert the traffic if we stop the people from going there then there will be total chaos on the roads. What did I know that the flyover would collapse.
Defense: I have a question here your honour, did the contractor making the road did not know what is the population of this area and how much traffic will be there. If he did not take all this into consideration and went on to make the flyover then clearly it is his fault.
Government lawyer: But the report says…
Defence: It is fabricated for the convenience of government, how else could the accident have been taken place?
A man suddenly gets up and throws a shoe at the defense lawyer. He shouts
“All of you are fooling us. We demand justice our people have died and the real culprit is still left out.”
The police rushes and catches the person, they are about to arrest when the government lawyer intervenes: Your honour aren’t we a democracy, the man belongs to the grieved party and from his statement it seems he knows something which we don’t. I want to question him
Judge: All right but please handcuff him before he throws another shoe.
Government lawyer: What is your name first of all?
Man: Ram
Government lawyer: Ok Ram, you said something about the real culprit, to whom were you referring to?
Ram: I was referring to Raza Sayeed and the government of India, it seems both are working hand in hand. They may be fighting against each other but we are always the victim. People like him come here in the name of religion they kill our people but nobody questions them. How did he cross the border did anyone enquire about that. The argument his lawyer is putting is he being human and effected by the accident he has the right to fight the case. What kind of humanity lies in a person who is planning for killing the people of other religion. The mere physical features do not make a person human. In the name of religion his country keeps attacking us and mainly the Hindus here, the government takes no step against them instead they are fighting a case on his behalf.

The defense lawyer who till now was sitting alone embarrassed by the attack suddenly gets up as if he discovered something exciting.
D. Lawyer: Now see here it looks like you do not understand law. Moreover you are giving a communal touch to a problem which is totally related to corruption. Your honour the man is being just impulsive we cannot allow him to make any more statements. It will incite communal issues.
Judge: Yes that is true and please take him into custody for contempt of court.
D. Lawyer: I would like to bring another point to notice. In the last hearing Hari Singh told that since he had to go for wedding Alok Kumar was made in charge. I would like to question him.
Judge: Permission granted.

Just then a bullet is fired which nearly misses Ram. There is total chaos in the court. The person who shot it ran away clean. Someone saw him but could only describe him as a tall bearded man.

Act III, Scene I

After the court firing, there were reports of communal violence in different parts of the country. Many people were reported to have died. A discussion on this matter is going on in the parliament.

Speaker: Please be silent and speak when you are asked to.
M.P. I: Mr. Speaker this issue is a very sensitive issue there have been communal tensions just because of the collapse of that flyover.
M.P. II: No it is not because of that, the communal tension is there because your government is not taking responsibility of the accident instead they are accusing innocent people.
M.P. I: We have made a team to investigate into the matters of the flyover collapse. But as of till now the court is holding Alok Kumar and Hari Singh for negligence of duty.
M.P. II: Unbelievable the two most harmless and innocent people are being interrogated daily and that man Yousuf Sayeed is resting calmly. He and people like him should be punished.
M.P. I: How can we punish him he is an outsider and moreover till now he didn’t do anything. The only crime that can be established against him is of illegally crossing the border. We can’t hang him for that
M.P. II: We can punish him in the same way as the way he was allowed to file the suit.
M.P. I: That would only make our relations with the neighbours worse, here we are trying to become friendly with our neighbours and you are proposing such absurd ideas.
M.P. II: What neighbours! They are killing our soldiers and civillians every now and then and you want to become friends with them?.
M.P. I: Yes! We have to look beyond these petty issues for a greater cause and I feel that due to some individual acts a minorty community in our country may get threatened and therefore something must be done for their protection.
M.P. II: Something for their protection? There is nothing that is endangering them but there are lot many things that are endangering our nation.
M.P. I: The minority has to be looked after other wise we will lose our symbol of a democratic country.
M.P II: We will not loose the symbol of a democratic country but will definitely earn the symbol of a foolish country.
M.P. I: You know the reason why you are sitting in opposition is because of this intolerant attitude of yours towards the minority.
M.P. II : What! When am I being intolerant I am simply saying you cannot control crime and communal violence by categorizing the people. All the innocent people of this country deserve equal protection from the bad elements of society.
M.P. I: No it is the minority that is being targeted and not the majority, the majority an protect themselves.
M.P. II: What if they can’t? don’t you owe any responsibility towards their life?
M.P I: See our agenda is minority protection because we feel they will be threatened we will think about others later on but first concentrate on this all of you.

There is an uproar in the parliament and the chaos and confusion leads to the adjournment of the day.

(End of scene).

Epilogue
The court imposed some penalities on Hari Singh and Alok Kumar for the negligence of duty. The special teams are still investigating the case as to how the bridge collapsed. Yousuf Sayeed is detained in the special prison for crossing the border illegaly. Meanwhile the communal tensions continue to grow. The demand of the government to work for the greater cause and developing friendly relations persists although no one yet knows what is this ‘greater cause’. All people know is that anything can happen to them at any time and no one will be held accountable to it but them only.
